Tasting of Some Hard To Get Imperial Stouts
Trying to increase my beer geek status, my good friend had informed me of a rare imperial stout tasting. The Yard in Santa Monica was the venue. One of the great things about this was that it’s in my hood. Close to the beach, makes it that much more enjoyable to sample beer at, since the cool ocean breezes keeps the temperature mild.
Imperial Stouts, in my opinion, are bold, dark and roasted beers. They tend to have a strong, carbonated taste. Bitterness is usually on the back end. The ones sampled, as they sat in the glasses became milder as the night progressed.

1) Sea Monster
Ballast Point makes this. had a roasted bitterness with toffee sweetness.
2) Dark Lord
Three Floyds. smooth, slight sting when sipped, followed by the soft taste of chocolate nibs.
3) Olde Rabbit’s Foot
Foothills Brewing Company. roasted barely taste with a bourbon smell.
4) Kate The Great
Portsmouth Brewery. chocolate malty with raisiny plum, sweet, malty, bitter on the end. THIS WAS THE WINNER OF THE NIGHT
Enjoy the big, bold taste of an Imperial Stout before the dog days of summer arrive! You can always purchase some now and have on hand for those rainy afternoons. Of course you can drink them anytime!
Until the next one….
