Beer and Cheese Pairing

A recent voyage found myself sailing to Glendale, CA. where I joined with my Beer Geek Cohort. Together, we went to the Eagle Rock Cheese shop and obtained some Stilton, dunbarton cheddar and Humboldt frog. Cap’n Cork Bottleshop was the next stop on the journey. Each of us purchased three beers to try with the cheeses.

The first cheese we sampled was the stilton.

Side note - this is one of my favourite cheeses.

I choose the Old Guardian BELGO while First Maat chose Lips Of Faith Dunkel Weiss.

The Old Guardian was very strong as was the stilton. Each neither complimented the other, rather they kept there separate tastes.

The Dunkel Weiss was to smokey for my liking and again kept separate from the Stilton.

The second cheese was the Dunbarton Cheddar

First Maat had picked the Sam Adams Longshot Friar Hop Ale, while I choose Firestone Walker Union Jack.

The Friar Hop Ale had a sugar taste to it which rounded out the taste and accentuated the cheddar.

My liking went to the Firestone Walker Union Jack. The right amount of hops highlighted the cheddar.

The third cheese was the Humboldt Frog

I went with the Allagash Dubbel Reserve and First Maat choose the Sam Adams Longshot Honey B’s Lavender Ale.

The tangyness of the Dubbel Reserve brought out the flavor of the cheese quiet nicely.

The lavender beer was to flowery for my tastes. Very light with an odd lingering bitterness on the palate.

I certainly learned that cheese goes with beer, not just wine!

Thanks to my Beer Geek bud for hosting this event. Of course I was honoured that the wife and sister-in-law joined in the fun.

Until next time

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.
